Three phases planned for the works : renovation of the existing building and re-use of the material in place (financed by the Historical Monuments), raising the reinforced concrete shell and following that, all the light work (both the lower and new part).
Le Corbusier heritage at Firminy-Vert
Given the exceptional Le Corbusier heritage, the urban community of Saint-Etienne Métropole would like to enhance and maximize its potential so that it becomes a true territorial development asset.
A unique site in Europe
Comparable to the sites of Brasilia and Chandigarh, Le Corbusier site in Firminy- Vert is considered as the most important in Europe for its urban coherence. It includes a housing unit, a cultural building, a stadium, a swimming pool and an unfinished church.
Assisted by the architect José Oubrerie, Le Corbusier completed the study for the project but the work only began after his death (1965), with the first construction phase in May 1970 that ceased due to the lack of available funds.
Classified as a “historical monument” in its current state, Le Corbusier church at Firminy-Vert, the only posthumous work of the famous architect, is the key-stone to the architectural heritage of Firminy and completing the church has been declared “in the community’s interest” by Saint-Etienne Métropole.

A rosy future
In time, two thirds of the overall surface area will be an annex to the Museum of Modern Art, specialized in housing design objects and will be a reference site for Le Corbusier’s works. The site will host important collections and events with a specific influence. Le Corbusier heritage is now an integral part of Saint-Etienne Métropole Design, the urban area’s design pole.
