In France’s leading region for mechanical engineering, Saint-Etienne Métropole heads the list of French conurbations in the domains of surface treatment and mechanical subcontracting.

Mechanical engineering and capital goods cover 1,300 companies and 32,000 workers in the Loire département, which accounts for 10% of the total industry in France.

The departement is notable for a number of areas of activity in mechanical engineering alone: 50% of all French cutting tools are manufactured in the Loire.
The design, manufacture and engineering of industrial and machine processes are also cutting-edge activities for the manufacture of metal components, metalworking and stamping, the manufacture of gears and the cutting of pinion wheels.
